OUR DAILY PINS

"Our Creator would never have made such
lovely days and have given us the deep hearts to
enjoy them, above and beyond all thought,
unless we were meant to be immortal."
~Nathaniel Hawthorne

One of my earlier posts mentioned the passing of my fourteen year old dog, Cuddles. It was a very difficult time for me and especially painful to tell Little Chick about why her little furry buddy would not be back to snuggle up with her and play with her. It happened a few months ago and she has dealt with the thought of him being up in Heaven pretty well until this week.

When it first happened it had taken me a while to get the courage up to tell her. I made excuses about where the dog was and I simply could not get the strength or heart to divulge the truth. I finally explained that Cuddles was up in Heaven with her Granddaddy and Uncle George. She liked the idea that they were way up like the birdies watching over us and keeping us safe.

The other day Little Chick woke up and asked if she could take Cuddles for a walk. She said that she did not want him up in the big sky any more. My eyes welled up with tears as I had to explain to her that Cuddles would not be back, but that he was looking down on us from up in Heaven. She said she didn't want him there any more and that she wanted him to come home. She got very quiet and then said, "Mommy, I really miss him."

As a parent we want to protect our children from anything and everything that would ever hurt them, but the reality is that we can't always protect them. It is a hard lesson for both parent and child. We can only try our best to soothe their beautiful little hearts and souls.

Children connect to pets in a powerful way that nourish their souls. I can relate to your story as my daughter grew up with Duvel, our family black lab. Duvel slept under her crib and when older I would see them playing in the back yard. Duvel was very old and Easter 2009 we went up to the Mts with family to celebrate the holiday and I get a call from our trusted pet sitter that Duvel is not able to stand and what do I want to do. Not ready, I say let her rest through the night and up her pain meds. Morning comes and no better, so she is put to sleep.

My daughter is now 11 years old and still to this day I will see her crying because she misses Duvel. I let her have her emotion and just hold her. Logically she knows Duvel is better off in heaven. The heart will still sometimes miss...

Best to your little chick and you too on grieving for your very loved dog.

I am so so sorry, I am a dog lover and lost my dog 7 years ago, still can't replace her. They are our babies too, and it is a loss just like any other. My heart feels your sorrow. Cuddles was loved and and she had a good life because of you. xoxo

Thank you so much for this comment Sherrie! I really appreciate it. It is hard, but at least we can know he lived a full life. My daughter is learning about loss earlier then I had to and it makes me sad. You will deal with your dogs going when it is time, but for now just love them a lot. I look forward to following your blog.

So Sorry to hear about Cuddles, I was getting teary-eyed reading your post. I have two dogs who are close to fourteen and the reality of them passing is all to real now. It will be a comfort to know your daughter will carry with her fond memories of her beloved Cuddles with her as she grows up.
