Why is a Dude on "Mom Bloggers Club?"
I know this is a "Mom Bloggers" group, but I'm hoping that you understand my goal. My hope here is to make connections with moms that care about getting boys to read. My blog, GettingBoystoRead.com, is dedicated to helping parents, teachers, and librarians learn how to get boys to read. I have spent thousands of hours and thousands of dollars launching and running it, all without a plan to make any money. I'm a good guy with good intentions :-)
THE TOKEN MALE:
I'm used to being the token male during my 14 years in teaching, 90% of which have been women. I taught sixth grade for the first 4 years of my career, followed by another 6 years as an elementary librarian. I switched to the high school level and am currently in my 4th year as the teacher-librarian at McLain Community HS. It's an alternative high school which means that 95% of our 700+ students are labeled at risk, all of which have dropped out of their previous school. When I first arrived in 2004 we did an extreme library makeover and made the library a great place to visit. We encourage food and drinks, have a library cafe, 4 huge Luv Sacs, offer free monthly pancakes, and do a ton of other fun things. We also have a "No Shushing" policy.
MY HOBBIES:
My favorite hobby is spending time my family. I have 13 and 9 year old kids and just celebrated 15 years of marriage. I also like technology, 4-wheeling, Sat. Morning Basketball, Hiking, and RV-ing
ODD TIDBITS:
I have been cutting my own hair for 18 years, My high school buddies call me E.T. because I have hammer toes, I Lived in Nome, Alaska for 8 months, I hated to Read as a kid and now I'm a librarian.

Hi Mike: I'm much more apt to respond regularly on FB. I'll look for you there.
I would like to connect with you there also. I am trying to make more friends and fans so that I can spread awareness for breast cancer during pregnancy. I was diagnosed Stage 3 in the 5th month of my pregnancy in May. My status updates on Facebook and LinkedIn are usually about my fight.
Okay... I'm such a loser. Sorry it's taken me so long to respond. I haven't spent much time here until recently. Too many balls in the air, you understand. But I'm really having fun meeting new people and getting to know some other MBC members. I would love to collaborate. I love your site! Just came from Parents As Teachers National Conference and definitely believe in/support what you are doing.
Hey Mike! I never read my momsblog page?! So interested in finding you! My 8 read old has just taken off in his reading over the last 4 wks?! It has been wonderful to see him grow. I want to instill a life long love of reading!!! The Magic Treehouse series has been a great help. I'll have to check out your site : )
I have a 9 year old boy that I currently homeschool. I looked at your site and I joined! Loved it! I think you are really filling a need. Time to put down the video game controller and pick up a book! I am a Charlotte Mason addicted homeschooling mom...so books are everything! lol. Would you mind if I linked to your blog...or linked you up to a homeschooling forum I frequent? I would love to feature you on my blog as your mission is very much on my heart as well. Get to know me more at: www.underthegoldenappletree.blogspot.com. I am shamelessly asking for followers..but please feel NO obligation...I joined your site because I truly like it. Which to be honest...I only follow blogs I like anyway. lol. As I am sure most do here also.
Hi, Mike. Gladly join your discussion here, thanks for invite! I have three boys and only one as a reader. Worth to say that he is the one who's ended up at Harvard ;) Tough job to get other two to read. Little (12 yo) one just finished assigned ;P reading for school in two days and 8 hours! Cheers to all. Oxana
