When Rowdy and Rambunctious Go Awry - Hop on Board the Crazy Train

I’m pretty sure I hit a new all-time low the other morning when I almost called the police to help me find my “missing” five year old, only to take another look in his bedroom and find him skillfully hiding behind a clump of well-placed bedding.  My phone with the police number already typed onto the dial pad was in my hand.Imagine how I would have had to explain my incompetence to police officers, some of whom I often see at court, my work, often enough to make me regularly relive my…See More

In My Defense, I Can Only Get Better From Here

Nothing – nothing – is more humbling than needing the teacher and administrators to triage your second grader for you at 7:30 a.m. because you are too out-of-touch to figure out for yourself whether he is, in fact, sick or just playing you like a fiddle. The fact that the "triage" lasted less than five minutes before our informal committee determined Eddie was too sick to be in school, and that my little preschooler, Billy, also started getting sick with this today, is perhaps even slightly more…See More

Finding Faith

The other day, I found out that I made a young woman quake about her future as a soon-to-be wife and eventual mother. She read my blog.Specifically, she read the mock letter to my husband, a tongue-in-cheek explanation of what he somehow cannot grasp – the impossible pace and unrealistic expectations facing moms in their daily work-life-family shuffles. And, boy, do I feel badly about painting a caricature for the uninitiated to read – just so that I could share a good laugh with all the other…See More

The Mommy Wars and Maternity Leave - We've Superwomaned Ourselves into a Tizzy

What the decision to return to work after 1 to 2 weeks by Yahoo! CEO and new mom Marissa Mayer COULD represent for working mothers everywhere is simply that this is but one example of how a powerful woman handled the work/life balance.Honestly. Speculation and preconceptions about powerful women aside, there it is. She is just one example reflecting what works for her. And, she has been both criticized and celebrated for this decision. In typical “Mommy Wars” style, we have taken to our…See More

Navigating the World of my Son’s Sweet Freckles – and Other Slights, Taunts, and Misunderstandings

Posted on September 27, 2012 by thesuperwomanmystiqueThis morning when I was dropping off my little guy at school, I watched as he spotted a couple of kids across the room and froze. His pale little face went paler and his expression, once calm and happy, went blank. It was as if a switch shut off; he shut down with no warning. My blood went cold as I followed his gaze and tried to decipher what had just transpired. Another teacher saw his reaction too, and we repeatedly prodded him to tell…See More

Honey, I'm Sorry I Can be a Real pain in the A**% (aka, A Day in the Life of a Harried Mom)

Dear patient and understanding husband,Please accept my apology for being an occasional nightmare to live with for the past 7 years. I assure you, I have the best of intentions when I wake up every morning that I will end the day on a high note.Instead, by the time you get home from work, you are sometimes stuck with a well-meaning, but crazed, exhausted lunatic. Did I mention I love you?I’d love to be the picture of a calm, adoring, and gussied-up wife at the end of your long day, much like…See More

Well, I'm no superwoman. But I've come close on rare days. Other days, I barely make "passable," "horribly inadequate," or, if I'm lucky, "getting there." With all the balls up in the air at once, I will take "passable" or “getting there” and celebrate my success any day! I am a mother of boys, a wife, a lawyer, a community activist, a problem-solver, boo-boo healer, taxi driver, social director, a friend (not as often as I'd like), and a host of things that are true to me- the non-mom and non-wife: a fitness enthusiast, avid reader, amateur quilter, writer, and a once-upon-a-time-and-hoping-to-be-again world traveler. I'm not all of these all at once, nor do I manage to excel at any consistently. I try to be kind in my self-assessments and not dissect all of the ways in which I could do better each day. Sometimes, I even fail at that! These days, I focus mostly on raising my seven and five year old boys well; tending to my marriage, family, and household; squeezing in a few hobbies now and then, and trying to convince work I am a professional- not just posing as one behind a smeared banana shirt, a wrinkled skirt,a half-a##!* attempt at daytime makeup, messy up-do (hoping it passes for the stylish messed up look mags rave over), and two different pumps, all of which I managed to throw on in 5 minutes before running out the door for the a.m. school, daycare and workday scramble.
What is your blogging philosophy?
I enjoy sharing my own slices of life with others who are in a potentially similar time of life. My blogs are written with humor, (hopefully) new insights, and shocking honesty as I roll through the good, bad and ugly daily adventures of trying to keep everything running smooth in all areas of life. Sometimes, I will write about these things, other times, maybe I will write my own musings on these topics. Always, I hope to give other moms something to laugh about, think about and learn from.
I have been blogging since...
